Another victim of NRA culture

I will forever be haunted by the child’s voice on the phone “My name is Nicolas Cruz.  My mother died recently and I don’t know what to do.”

Nicolas Cruz, the shooter at Stoneman Douglas in Parkland, Florida, is a teenager and, until recently, a student himself at the 3000-student high school.  Since his Valentine’s Day Massacre which claimed 17 lives, much has been published about the 19-year old’s troubled life. Arrested a short time after the attack by local police, Cruz faces 17 counts of premeditated murder. The prosecutor is calling for the death penalty. Cruz has indicated he’ll plead guilty if the death penalty is taken off the table.

Seeing Nicolas Cruz as he’s brought into court, I am taken by how thin, deflated he looks. Caved chest, head hanging low as possible, he shuffles to the defense table with shackled waist, ankles and wrists. He is a shell of a teenager, traumatized, dejected, unable to look up or respond to anything around him.

Politicians are quick to cast blame on the system for not stopping a “sicko” from an “act of pure evil.” Although law enforcement, social services and/or other emergency agencies had (supposedly) been alerted some 39 times in the last  two years that Cruz was a danger to himself and others, he was allowed to accumulate 10 weapons of varying types and calibers including the AR-15 assault rifle.

The weapon of choice among ardent 2nd Amenders & the National Rifle Association, the semi-automatic AR-15 was used in the mass murders at Pulse Nightclub, the Aurora, Colorado movie theater, the Las Vegas outdoor concert, the Sutherland, TX church, and Sandy Hook Elementary School 5 years ago. In each case, the weapon and high-velocity ammunition were obtained legally.

Nicolas Cruz is the poster child of the lone wolf who commits mass shootings in America. Unable to buy a handgun until age 21, Cruz needed to be just 18 years old  to purchase his AR-15 and train on a youth gun range funded in part with a grant from the NRA.  Disaffected, disassociated, socially inept, an outlier who never fit in, he was that kid who can never be normal.

As Cruz drifted farther from normalcy, he found kindred spirits, an accepting family of some very fine people – skinheads, white nationalists, Anglo-Americans, NeoNazis. Indeed, Cruz allegedly scratched swastikas onto the metal ammo clips he left behind signifying his intent and purpose.

The argument is made that millions of gun owners have tough lives but they don’t shoot up schools. Why did Nicolas Cruz fall off the edge into an orgy of blood and violence against his own peers?

His mother died suddenly just months before from a case of the flu. There were only 4 people at her funeral – himself, his brother and two former neighbors. The family of a classmate invited Nicolas to live with them but it’s clear the loss of his mother was so significant that tragedy of some kind was inevitable.

The Daily Stormer’s Style Guide

A leaked style guide reveals they’re Nazis about grammar (and Jews, Fems, Fags, etc).

“In September 2017, Vox Day, a Gamergate holdover who has assumed the position of racist alt-right figurehead, published a handful of brief excerpts from what he described as the “Andrew Anglin” style guide. For the blissfully unaware, Anglin is a neo-Nazi troll and propagandist who runs The Daily Stormer, one of the more prominent sites of the white supremacist web. The passages selected by Vox Day in his blog post suggested that Anglin is persnickety about detail and presentation ― except on the subject of the Jews, who are to be blamed “for everything.”

HuffPost has acquired the 17-page document in its entirety, as well as transcripts from an IRC channel where the document was shared in an effort to recruit new writers. It’s more than a style guide for writing internet-friendly neo-Nazi prose; it’s a playbook for the alt-right.

The style guide, according to Vox Day, was a set of directives for whoever might be writing under Anglin’s name, the idea being that Anglin’s army of ghostwriters need to maintain some sense of consistent style. But the guide appears to be for all of the site’s writers, many of whom write under their own names (or at least their own pseudonyms).

Last Friday, in an IRC channel, Andrew Auernheimer, a white supremacist hacker and Daily Stormer system administrator also known as Weev, began explaining to a group of people how one might start writing for The Daily Stormer:

okay basically, it works like this, you can write articles, if we dont like them you can put them on your own blog or whatever, if we accept them for publication we will pay you $14.88

“Fourteen,” of course, alludes to the 14 words in the old David Lane slogan, “We must secure the existence of our people and a future for white children.” The double eights refer to the eighth letter of the alphabet (“HH” or “Heil Hitler”). The number 1488 is a common shibboleth among white supremacists. We’re sure they find this extremely clever.

When one person asked if the site had any paid positions open, Weev dropped in a link and wrote, “theres style guide read the site for a couple weeks, get a hang of the style and editorial tone [sic]” followed immediately by “learn the style guide.”

Like any such guide, this one contains plenty of discussion about the more mundane aspects of blog hygiene — grammar, formatting, quirks of house style. “‘Muslim’ should be spelled ‘Moslem,’” it notes at one point.

My Dear Republican Family: An Open Letter

I know I’ve always been the “leftie, liberal Democrat, poly sci Berkeley grad” at our family dinner table.  [Can you imagine how boring dinnertime would have been all those years without me?] A lone dissenting voice made louder by the invigorating conversations / discussions  / arguments Dad & I enjoyed immensely. He’d go right as I went left, debating & defending the partisan issues of the day, ending up after desert agreeing to keep it for the next time.

These were the 1960’s. Vietnam War. No matter how heated the conversation / fight got it was a given that we both loved America.

Never did we disrespect or impugn the character of others. Never did we throw insults meant to confuse, malign.

Never did we debase our Constitutional discourse with fake news & conspiracy theories.

Never, in all the years of being a proud American & member of the Grand Old Party (Reagan Republican) would Dad have gone altRIGHT .

Never would he defend – in any way way, shape, form – anything Breitbart News, former Senior White House Advisor to President Trump, Steve Bannon (see below) spewed at the Orange County, California State GOP Convention October 20, 2017 where he was greeted like  a rock star

This is our family’s HOME BASE. Not theirs. Please, their intent is to distract, deconstruct, destroy by turning the Great State of California against itself. Us against Them. Us against Whom?

I don’t quite know what my honorable, dignified father would have felt and thought if he had heard his fellow Republicans BOO Senator John McCain.

Or of Bannon’s remarks about President George W Bush, that he was a “piece of work” and an embarrassment to the party & himself? That he was the worst President in history?

But remember, this is the man who inspired his boss, President Donald Trump,  to get  thousands of Boy Scouts [Eagle Scouts, Scout leaders & parents] at their 4-year Jamboree to BOO President Obama this summer.

It is here I stop you all to, please, consider where you are going & whom you are following. This Tweet from Nov 2016 says it plainly and simply.

I pray my family heed my WARNING of the IMMINENT DANGER to OUR NATION.

Fake Nazi News

Letter to the Editor, Spokesman Review

David Wordinger’s letter “Evenhanded condemnation” recites the alternative facts about the Charlottesville Rally provided on Breitbart.com and altRIGHT social media.

altFACTS are the bedrock of “Fake News”. Whenever they are encountered, we must refute them in detail and in print so that history can be written accurately and truthfully.

Permit to rally – Unite the Right did not have a permit for their Torchlight March the night before.  People who witnessed it use words like horrified, terrorized, terrified, humiliated, devastated to describe their emotions watching the hundreds of self-avowed nazis, Ku Klux Klan members, and numerous other white supremacist groups from around the nation parade through their streets.

Chanting “Jews will not replace us” and “Blood and Soil” they trooped past a small synagogue, spitting, jeering , imitating cutting someones’s throat.

The 1st Amendment does not protect speech that calls for the violent removal and/or elimination of Jews, Blacks,  Latinos, Gays, Trans, Muslims, Mentally Ill, Disabled, Gypsies, Political Opponents, and of course Dreamers.

Amendment I

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances.

On Saturday when they did have a permit to rally they came armed to the teeth. Charlottesville  police say they were outgunned by the extremely well-organized right wing militias who took full advantage of Virginia’s Open Carry law. (see photos)

On the other side were the so-called counter protesters which (according to Wordinger) included

..”antifa, Black Lives Matter, Redneck Revolt (?) and other agitators who have stifled speech and disrupted Trump rallies, college presentations and other peaceful events.”

This sentence can be found almost word-for-word on Breitbart.com & Alex Jones ‘InfoWars’ TV show it’s loaded with altFACTS.

I’ll break it down.

antifa – antifascists written in lower case because they do not organize. They are not a gang or association or club or playgroup.  American antifa from different from European antifa. (my blog post about antifa protesters at G20 Summit  to come)

Black Lives Matter – grassroot organizations formed by political and community activists, and students, churches, schools in response to a spate of high-profile police shootings. In Ferguson, MO, protests against police sparked a rolling riot

End the Denial About Trump
E.J. Dionne Jr., The Washington Post
Dionne Jr. writes: “It should not have taken the death and injury of innocents to move our nation toward moral clarity. It should not have taken President Trump’s disgraceful refusal to condemn white supremacy, bigotry and Nazism to make clear to all who he is and which dark impulses he is willing to exploit to maintain his hold on power.”
